As advertised in The Quarter Rat Magazine:
Bayou Glasses (or Buy-you Glasses) was started three years ago, in the middle of the day, at the Golden Lantern by French Quarter Girl and Dickie. Whilst sipping on fabulous cocktails made by Steve Manning, French Quarter Girl and Dickie were becoming increasingly annoyed by some loud chick, so drunk she kept mispronouncing Bayou Classic. "The Bayou Glasses is next week', she repetitively slurred. After a few more fabulous cocktails made by Steve Manning, Dickie decided to tell Drunk Annoying Chick that she was wrong:"The Bayou CLASSIC, is next week. Today is Bayou GLASSES!", said Dickie. French Quarter Girl thought this was so funny, she fell off her barstool! From the ground she declared,: "This day, the Sunday before Bayou Classic shall ever be known as Bayou Glasses." At this point French Quarter Girl was politely cut off by Steve Manning. Never one to be bored, French Quarter Girl decided to invest her entire paycheck on sunglasses from the French Market. With Dickie following and contributing the two decided to distribute the glasses along lower Decatur and told everyone who received a pair to buy another pair and give that pair to a friend or stranger so that at the end of the day everyone in the French Quarter would have a new pair of sunglasses!~ Many people participated and this holiday has been growing ever since! However, the original goal of EVERYONE in the Quarter having a new pair of sunglasses has not yet been met.
This year, we are hoping to meet that goal. So, don't forget, the Sunday before the Bayou Classic is Bayou Glasses day! Buy a pair of sunglasses, give them to a friend or stranger and urge them to pay it forward.
Doesn't matter where you buy them. However, we will be dropping off a limited number of glasses to be offered for sale at the Starlight bar on N. Rampart. All proceeds from those glasses will go to Javiers, Toys for Tots Starlight fund!
